French Passengers may have the option for USB tickets

Riding the train is always a time consuming process of waiting to buy a ticket, then waiting in line to use the ticket. French public transportation company SCNF is testing out a way to make this entire process easier for passengers.

This system involves the use of Weneo ID Smart, a USB card that gives the passenger the power of paying for a ticket before he or she arrives at the station. All a user needs to do is plug in the USB card onto their computer, and he or she can pay for their tickets in advance online, withdrawing funds from their own bank account.

As long as the passenger does not forget his or her USB card, the fare will be deducted from it via RFID reader or from an attendant with a handheld tool.

So far, this program is in the trial stage, as SCNF is trying it out on 1,000 passengers at this present time. If it is successful, they fully intend to implement it to all customers by 2010.

Is there any reason why this process can’t be used for something like movie tickets, bus tickets, or sports tickets? If this Weneo ID Smart works, I can completely see the entire world of tickets changing as we know it. No more slips of paper or ticket stubs.

Of course, what do you do with the guy who says: “I paid for it, I did. I don’t know why your RFID reader isn’t reading it.” I guess he’ll have to go in a different line.

Now here’s a pillow that looks really soft and yet is able to lift your moody self out of the doldrums thanks to a built-in LED. Perfect for folks who want to catch up on their reading before they hit the sack, as the glow is bright enough to illuminate the pages of your tome. Good thing it comes with an On/Off switch as well, allowing you to conserve the batteries in the long run. This reminds me of the LED Heart-shaped Pillow, save for a different form factor. The good news? Your alarm clock is the Gun O’Clock, and your bedside table holds its IR pistol that shoots the alarm quiet. The bad news? The gun only works on the clock. Maybe today is a good day to try out some counseling.
With fast food joints offering a limited soft drink menu of usually Coke, Diet Coke, Orange, 7up and Root Beer (or their Pepsi “equivalents”) sometimes the only way to keep drink options interesting is with the classic “suicide,” (mixing them all). Well now, Coca Cola is poised to introduce a Fountain Machine that will dispense soft drinks with up to 100 flavor combinations.

What’s advantageous to store owners is that they won’t have to redesign their beverage stations to accommodate the new dispenser, as it takes up the same space as current machines offering 8 flavors. The design can do this thanks to high-concentrate ingredients which come in cartridges, a design that’s much like that of a printer, thereby allowing for the simple swapping out of replacement cartridges on the fly, or for changing out unpopular flavors for new ones.

“Innovation is our lifeblood,” said Chris Lowe, president of the Coca-Cola North America food service and on-premise division, “and we wanted a dispenser that offers consumers greater beverage variety while helping our customers increase beverage profitability.”

Early prototypes underwent testing earlier this summer with Coke planning a limited release sometimes next year.

Star Trek Reboot Movie Will Have Tons of Gadgets [Gadgets]

The upcoming Star Trek reboot by J.J. Abrams has a lot going for it, from interesting choices in actors (John Cho, Simon Pegg and even a cameo by the son of James Doohan, the original Scotty), to updated special effects and concepts. What we’re interested in are all the gadgets, from phasers to tricorders and even the ship itself.

How will they play in the update? Kind of like easter eggs, says Abrams, who stressed that the movie will be targeted toward people who have no idea of the history, yet have appearances by old die-hard devices like Uhura’s Bluetooth headset that series fans can pick out. This means we should all get our wallets ready for the torrent of replica gadgets coming in 2009.
Firefighting Sprinkler Suit From 1931 [Retromodo]

Back in 1931 Modern Mechanix magazine ran an article about an invention used by German firefighters to protect themselves from being engulfed in flames. The simple device consisted of a helmet with a built-in sprinkler system that connects with a nozzle on the hose. Using a hand lever, the firefighter could control the amount of spray needed for a given situation. Clever—but it seems that fighting a fire in something that looks like an old-timey deep sea diving helmet might prove problematic.
I have no doubt that many of our readers who are in their 30s and 40s have already moved on to the world of MP3s and other “file-based” entertainment formats, doing away with the old vanguard of physical media such as cassettes and CDs. What happens then, you ask, to your collection of old (but beloved) CDs that are currently sitting in a box up at the attic? Instead of letting it collect dust and having grandkids query you about the days where media wasn’t stored on holographic discs, why not sell off your old or unwanted CDs for some cash? After all, times are pretty lean at this moment, so any method where you are able to make some additional dosh would be most welcome, especially where things you don’t want any more are concerned. This new online service is known as Musicmagpie.co.uk, and they will pay anywhere from 25p up to £3 for each CD.

I would presume that the trade-in value will have a lot to do with the rarity of a disc as well as the condition it is shipped to them, so it always pays to take good care of your stuff as you never know when it might turn into some sort of sought after collectible overnight. This is a free-to-use trade in service, and in case you were wondering whether anyone is foolish enough to throw away perfectly OK CDs, statistics show that over £21 million in old CDs are thrown away in the UK every year. Now that you see the big picture, things will start to get interesting. All you need to do is head on to Musicmagpie.co.uk, click the ‘Get cash for your old CDs’ button and fill in the barcode number found on each CD that you want to sell. The website will then reference that number with its database, offering you a certain amount of cash. It is capable of purchasing up to 250 CDs per transaction.

I guess it is high time I start to rummage through my junk…

Seskimo of London has rolled out the BatRest, and this unique iPhone 3G holder is touted to be the first in the world which folds flat to the size of a credit card, slipping comfortably into your wallet. This makes it highly portable, and is perfect for folks who use their iPhone 3G as a primary video watching device as well. It works great for frequent travelers as your hands don’t have to suffer from any cramps from holding the iPhone 3G since the handset itself can be held in position by the BatRest. In addition to the iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPod touch, the BatRest also works great with a bunch of other media players and digital cameras. It will come in black, white and translucent colors, although there is the option to produce it in other colors or with custom print. The BatRest is currently retailing for a mere $3.95 each, and chances are Wayne Enterprises are behind the whole idea.

DVDO has just introduced the DVDO EDGE - an affordable world-class video processor that is capable of upconverting virtually all video formats up to 1080p to go along nicely with your recently purchased HDTV. This is made possible thanks to the full range of Anchor Bay’s Video Reference Series (VRS) technologies. Folks who love convergence will definitely fall in love with the DVDO EDGE, since it also doubles up as the ultimate A/V hub thanks to half a dozen HDMI 1.3 “Deep Color” inputs, a couple of HDMI 1.3 outputs and the whole works of analog and digital A/V connections. The revised user interface makes it a snap to set up and operate, allowing different users to use personalized set ups for easy familiarity.

The mentioned VRS technologies will provide deinterlacing with 10-bit precision for all sources, ranging from 480i to 1080i, while and Auto PReP (Progressive Reprocessing) is smart enough to “undo” poor deinterlacing in source devices (DVD/set-top box, etc.) which utilize general purpose chips for upscaling purposes in order to deliver a flawless picture to your display. EDGE is capable of converting multiple resolutions from SD to HD up to full HD (1080p), while other technologies used for that so-called “perfect” image include Mosquito Noise Reduction, Fine Detail Enhancement, Edge Enhancement, Progressive Cadence Detection, RightRate, Precision A/V Lipsync, and Auto CUE-C. To hook up with your display device (preferably one that is full HD capable), all you need is a solitary HDMI cable and you’re good to go.

Not only movie buffs will find this useful, but gamers as well since the ‘Game Mode’ will see the EDGE eliminate video processing delay, while the front panel HDMI input makes it all the more convenient to plug in your Xbox 360 and PS3. I must admit that I’m rather skeptical of the whole device - after all, watching upconverted video is somewhat akin to a pair of headphones that does virtual 5.1 surround sound, isn’t it? I would much rather save that $799 and spend it on a PS3 instead.

New Kindle Rumors prove premature

Rumors have abounded that Amazon has been poised to release a new version of the Kindle. Amazon is reported squelching such rumors by saying a new version wifi enabled e-book reader are unfounded.

The rumor going around was that Amazon was planning a stripped down, cheaper version aimed at the student market. The idea being that with more universities opting for PDF copies instead of expensive books for students, that an eBook reader would be a hot item as students get ready to return to school. But in an interview with the Gray Old Lady, Amazon’s Craig Berman squashed that rumor saying that the earliest a new version of the Kindle could come out would be sometime in 2009.

“Don’t believe everything you read,” said Berman, “there’s a lot of rumor and speculation out there about Kindle. One thing I can tell you for sure is that there will be no new version of Kindle this year. A new version will come out sometime next year at the earliest.”

Berman wouldn’t confirm that a new Kindle would be aimed at the student market, but it seems that if it were, then the timing would be for a new Kindle to be released in time for parents and students shopping for new school supplies in preparation for school, not afterwards when the demand would be noticeably lighter.

World’s Most Powerful Magnet Under Construction in Florida [Magnets]

You have probably heard stories about patient injuries or death occurring when someone introduces a heavy metal object into the same room as an MRI machine. Obviously, we are talking about some seriously powerful magnets here. However, the $10 million magnet currently under construction at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Florida is expected to reach 100 tesla when finished—about 67 times more powerful than a typical MRI machine.

That is just the kind of power needed to test the properties of high-temperature superconductors like iron oxyarsenide which may result in better, cheaper MRI machines and high-voltage power lines. It could also be used for certain zero-gravity experiments and magnetic propulsion systems that could eliminate the need for traditional rockets down the line. Researchers have been able to create magnetic fields over 100 T for years, but if successful, this would be the first magnet that could repeatedly hold up to the strain. According to Greg Boebinger, director of the Magnet Lab, the magnet will have to resist Lorentz forces “equivalent to the explosive force of 200 sticks of dynamite packed into a volume of space the size of a marble.” [IEEE Spectrum Online via New Launches via DVICE]
